Notre Dame football fans all across Indiana are putting their pride in their front yards, with homemade “#1” holiday light displays.
“It took basically less than an hour to build it,” said Eric Tamashasky, of South Bend, who assembled his “#1” right before Thanksgiving. It’s now perched up on his roof.
“A lot of people drive by, they honk their horns, if they see us outside, people yell ‘Go Irish!’ we yell it back,” he said.
All it takes to build one are two by fours, staples, a string of lights, and for Derek Tobolski, of Granger, some patience.
“The tough part was actually stapling all the lights on. I kept blowing fuses and putting staples through the wires,” he said, “it was kind of a pain but it was worth it in the end.”
Tobolski’s display also consists of a brightly lit green and blue ND logo.
“As soon as they beat USC, I decided I had to do it,” he said.
The idea for the “#1” design comes from a light display atop Grace Hall on the Notre Dame campus. The university puts it up every time one of its athletic teams is ranked in first place. The last time football fans were able to celebrate the number one spot was back in 1993.
“It’s been a long time coming,” said Tamashasky.
