SOUTH BEND -- Notre Dame hopes some of its students will come up with the next popular smartphone app.
The university just announced the winners of a contest that encouraged teams to design and test software that might someday end up on your iPhone or Android.
Taylor Seale and Ryan Shea, both juniors, won a $3,500 first-place prize for their app, Map Pics, which displays on a map all of the images taken in a certain area. It would be most helpful during big events, like football games, where there are a lot of people sharing pictures on Facebook and Twitter, the students said.
“For the amount of tourists that come on to Notre Dame's campus, it's a virtual tour guide,” said Seale.
Students in a mobile computing class spent the semester building smartphone apps, meant to help users better communicate and share news.
The contest was co-sponsored by Schurz Communications Inc., the parent company of WSBT.
“You have taken problems that we think about all the time and really seen them in new ways,” Todd Schurz, President and CEO of Schurz Communications Inc., told the students.
Other entries included an app which helps radio listeners win cash and prizes during live on-air contests.
Another program called Room-Me allows college students to meet potential roommates, based on personality, behavior, and budgets.
“It’s cool that we could create something that so many people could use and find helpful in their everyday lives,” said Shea, who helped design Map Pics.
