MONROE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say a passenger who was trying to help a driver whose pickup truck ran out of gas has been struck and killed in southeast Michigan.

The Monroe County sheriff's department said in a statement that 49-year-old Orlando Porter got out Sunday night in Monroe Township to get a gas can when he and the truck were hit by another pickup truck. The department says he was taken to a hospital, where he died of injuries.

Authorities say the 33-year-old driver of the pickup in which Porter was a passenger wasn't injured. The 59-year-old driver of the other pickup was treated at a hospital and released.

Porter was from Monroe County's La Salle Township. The crash, which happened about 35 miles southwest of Detroit, is under investigation.
