INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Police have arrested a suspect they say shot another man near the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the early morning hours before the Indy 500.

Authorities said Thursday that 39-year-old Derrick Henderson of Indianapolis admitted he shot 31-year-old Jamel D. Woodard. Police arrested him Wednesday at his job in Brownsburg.

Police say Woodard was shot in the chest May 27 after an apparent altercation across from the speedway, near 25th Street and Georgetown Road.

A spokesman for the Marion County Jail said Henderson was being held Thursday on preliminary charges of aggravated battery and criminal recklessness. His bond was set at $20,000.

After the shooting, Woodard was taken to Wishard Hospital, where he was listed in good condition a day later.
