MUNISING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan state police say they're investigating an explosion at the home of an Upper Peninsula man who was experimenting with powdered chemicals in his workshop.

Officers say 61-year-old Kenneth Rieli (RYE-lee) is a hobby inventor, chemist and engineer from Munising Township. He suffered serious injuries in the explosion Friday and underwent surgery for trauma at Marquette General Hospital.

A hospital spokeswoman said Monday he was listed in fair condition.

Rieli's granddaughter, 19-year-old Elizabeth Lester, was treated for minor injuries.

State police detective Sgt. Clint Michelin said the blast did minor damage to the house. Technicians with the FBI and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives helped remove potentially hazardous substances.

Sgt. Kevin Dowling says police are still looking into what caused the explosion.
