NORTON SHORES, Mich. (AP) — Western Michigan authorities say a police officer answering a domestic violence call shot and killed a knife-wielding ex-con who recently finished a prison term for attacking police.

Muskegon County Prosecutor Tony Tague identifies the dead man as 48-year-old Benjamin Kukulka of Norton Shore, a man with a long criminal record who got out of prison in November after serving time for a 2009 assault on police.

The Muskegon Chronicle says Kukulka's elderly mother called police Sunday morning to report a domestic violence incident, and two officers went to the home she shared with her son.

Police say Kukulka confronted the officers with the knife, and one of them shot him. That officer apparently sustained a cut to the leg.

State police are investigating.
