BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say a 45-year-old southern Michigan man kidnapped and raped a Montana woman after promising to give her a bus ticket home.

The Kalamazoo Gazette and the Battle Creek Enquirer report Kelvin Hawkins was arraigned Thursday on charges including kidnapping and first-degree criminal sexual conduct. The Battle Creek man was ordered held on $500,000 bond and faces life in prison if convicted.

Hawkins has requested a court-appointed attorney.

Police say he met the 48-year-old woman Tuesday in the Detroit area and promised to drive her to Battle Creek, where he would give her a bus ticket to Billings, Mont. Police say he raped her at his apartment before leaving her at a truck stop early Wednesday in Calhoun County's Emmett Township.

Prosecutors say Hawkins could face additional charges.
