NILES TOWNSHIP – We now know what caused an ultralight plane to go down in Niles Township northwest of the Jerry Tyler Memorial Airport on Saturday night. The pilot, 49-year-old Chris McKenna of Elkhart, died in that crash.

Michigan State Police Sergeant Steve Barker says mechanical failure is to blame.

Another pilot and an FAA representative found that a piece was either missing or not properly installed in the stick.

The stick is what pilots use to control the altitude and movement of the plane. Without it, they don't have complete control.

Sergeant Barker says McKenna was the one who built the plane.
