INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The sheriff's department has moved all pregnant inmates back to the Marion County jail.

The effort comes in the wake of a death at a private facility.

Amber Redden collapsed and died at Liberty Hall last month after internal bleeding from an ectopic pregnancy. The 27-year-old was serving a 22-month sentence for theft.

The Indianapolis Star reports Sheriff John Layton moved 18 pregnant inmates to cells that are close to the around-the-clock medical staff at the main jail.

Liberty Hall is a 250-bed private facility intended for the incarceration of mothers.

Liberty Hall lawyer Murray Clark says the facility has voluntarily increased its medical staff and hired a consultant to review policies and procedures.
