Nebraska-based Naturally Recycled Proteins wants to build a $10 million plant on 20 acres about two miles outside Union City. The plant would use a slurry made from grinding up old laying hens to make a protein and flavor additive for dog foods.
Company officials acknowledge there's a potential for odor but say golf course owners within 6.5 miles of its Iowa plant have never received complaints from customers.
Resident Cheryl Tillman tells The Star Press that the 68 jobs the plant would create aren't enough to offset odor concerns.
Randolph County commissioners will visit the Iowa plant to check odors before voting on a rezoning request on April 4.
