NEW CARLISLE -- It's a plan expected to bring hundreds of new jobs to St. Joseph County -- but neighbors near New Carlisle want to make sure it's safe.
County leaders sounded excited Thursday night during a permit hearing about a proposed natural gas power plant.
During the Indiana Department of Environmental Management air permit hearing, representatives from the county commission, county council, chamber of commerce and several construction unions spoke in favor of the project.
It's the third proposed power plant at the site Olive Township.
But some want to make sure if built this plant is run properly.
"I think the important thing is that the agencies who are put in charge of these operations and the oversight of these operations are doing their due diligence and looking at the big picture," said Jack Daly of New Carlisle.
There are still several other permits the power plant has to get before construction can start.
A company spokesperson says if all goes well in the current permit process, construction could start by the end of next year.
