SOUTH BEND – Police in South Bend are cracking down on prostitution.
Late Saturday night and early Sunday morning, the SBPD Street Crimes Unit conducted a prostitution sting, and a number of men caught soliciting prostitutes were arrested.
The exact number of men was not being released, and Commander Lt. Daniel Skibins wouldn’t say where the sting operation took place.
He does say several complaints and tips indicated the website southbendpackage.com was being used to solicit prostitutes in the city.
“The objective of the sting is to deter individuals from utilizing the internet or any form of social media for criminal activity,” said Skibins. “Those using any means for solicitation risk being arrested and charged for crimes related to prostitution.”
South Bend Police Chief Ron Teachman responded by saying, “As the sex for a fee industry moves from the streets to online, we adjust our demand reduction tactics accordingly. I hope this operation and those that will follow send a message to potential customers: The women of South Bend are cherished and they are not for sale.”
