SOUTH BEND – Thursday night is your chance to tell the postal service what you think about a proposal to shut down a South Bend distribution center.

The move would reportedly save $6 million a year, but workers say those alleged savings would not make up for what would be lost.

Workers rallied outside the post office ahead of Thursday night’s forum.

The postal service says the closing is necessary to eliminate a budget shortfall. It is considering closing 252 of 500 distribution centers around the country.

Workers at the South Bend facility say 200 jobs would be lost and hurt the local economy.

"South Bend's been flagged as a dying city and what this will do is put the nail in the coffin. It's not going to bring businesses in,” said president of American Postal Workers Rick Dainelli. “What kind of business is going to want four or five day mail delivery? They're not going to want that."

Thursday’s public meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the Century Center.
