ST. JOSEPH COUNTY – All kinds of questions are being asked after election trouble in St. Joseph County on Tuesday.
Murray Winn of St. Joseph County's election board told WSBT they made a mistake.
The county didn't have enough ballots, and it was hard to get more to polling places in time.
At times, they literally were trying to print off new ballots to get them out to polling locations.
Mike Mayenes has worked as a poll inspector in German Township for 20 years and says this is the first time there have not been enough ballots.
Mayenes thinks the election board underestimated voter turnout.
Chief St. Joseph County Deputy Clerk Rita Glenn says they plan for the election a year in advance but can never predict how many people will show up to the polls.
However, poll workers we talked to had a different story.
“This is terrible,” said Maeyens. “We’re not getting the support from downtown.”
“There was no excuse for taking 3 ½ hours to get us the ballots we needed,” said Osceola pollworker Susan Leineger.
At least one person told WSBT he ended up not voting because of the problem.
