Nearly a year after Belleville Park's playground burned, City of South Bend officials have decided to rebuild. Construction bids are being accepted for another week, but soon, the park will again be a popular place.

When first-time mom, Jennifer Talboom was pregnant with her daughter Jayda, she looked forward to taking her to Belleville Park to play. Just a month after Jayda was born, most of the park's playground was destroyed by fire.

Last July, the 6-year-old playground suspiciously caught fire. In November, the South Bend Park Department received an insurance check for more than $200,000.

At Monday's Common Council meeting, members unanimously approved spending $150,000 of that money to build a new fire-resistant playground.

And Belleville's not the only park getting some improvements. The remaining insurance money will be used on future improvements at Howard Park.

Our partners at the South Bend Tribune report City Controller Mark Neal said a community group is working on a plan for that park near downtown. He expects that plan to be complete within a couple months.
