The following release was issued Friday morning by the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office
On Thursday, January 3, 2013 case workers from the Indiana Department of Child Services and investigators from the LaPorte County Metro Operations Unit were called to investigate the welfare of a three (3) year old child in a home located in the 1600 block of Ohio Street in LaPorte. The initial investigation revealed possible illegal activity in the home and a search warrant was applied for and granted by the LaPorte County Circuit Court.
A subsequent search pursuant to the search warrant was conducted and two (2) persons were detained and arrested. 32 year old Eric SLAYTON and 20 year old Aldo ZAPPITELLI were transported to the La Porte County Jail. Both SLAYTON and ZAPPITELLI have been charged with Possession of Marijuana, a class “A” misdemeanor and Dealing a Schedule I Controlled Substance (heroin), a class “B” felony. In addition, it was learned that Aldo ZAPPITELLI was wanted in the State of Michigan for Burglary and he is therefore being held without bond, awaiting potential extradition. Eric SLAYTON’s bond has been set at $3,505 cash.
LaPorte County Sheriff Michael Mollenhauer states: “Criminal activity in the presence of children, particularly drug activity, will not be tolerated by the LaPorte Police Department, Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana Department of Child Services.” He added: “The Sheriff’s Office has again partnered with the LaPorte Police Department to arrest two more suspected drug abusers.”
The public is encouraged to report potential drug activity to the La Porte County Metro Operations Unit at (219) 325-9022. The LaPorte County Metro Operations Unit is a multi-jurisdictional drug task force comprised of investigators from the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office and LaPorte Police Department.
