SOUTH BEND – It was a year ago this week when 10-year-old Tramelle Sturgis of South Bend was killed by his father.
Tramelle’s grandmother was sentenced to 50 years behind bars Thursday for neglect for knowing about the abuse and not speaking out.
On Saturday, a balloon release was part of the community anniversary event held on West Washington Street where Tramelle lived and died.
“We have the community here,” said event organizer Cheryl King. “Like our posters say, we will lend a hand, we are our brothers and sisters keeper . (Tramelle) fell through the crack, and it didn’t have to happen. Because of his life, as hurtful as it is, that he left us. He woke up a community. He woke up a DCS (Department of Child Services). He woke up possibly one part a nation problem of child abuse. He was a part of it.”
The group that assembled Saturday also offered prayers for Tramelle and held a march for his remembrance.
