Clippinger is accused of killing his brother Matthew Clippinger and his sister-in-law Lisa at their home on 11th Street in Mishawaka, reportedly after an argument about a gun.
Two weeks ago, just days after the shooting death of his brother and sister-in-law in their Mishawaka home, Clippinger admitted his guilt during an arraignment, which took place via video monitor from the St. Joseph County Jail. He then asked the judge for a fast and speedy trial — meaning it would have to take place within 70 days.
But today, when Clippinger appeared before St. Joseph Superior Court Judge Jerome Frese for his initial hearing, the plan for a quick and speedy trial was delayed, at least temporarily.
Brian May, the public defender assigned to Clippinger, said he would have to discuss the request before it could be formally submitted.
His next court date is scheduled for Aug. 28.
Clippinger already has served 20 years in prison for the 1990 shooting death of a 66 year-old man before being released in 2010. If convicted in the double homicide, it’s likely he’ll spend much of the rest of his life in prison.
Watching throughout today’s brief hearing were members of Clippinger’s family.
Afterward, they declined to speak to a reporter about the case.
