WAYNE, Mich. (AP) — The sister of a woman killed in a Detroit-area furniture store explosion says she's upset with how a dispatcher treated her.

Laurel Hunter called Wayne police Dec. 29 asking about Leslie Machniak (MASH'-nee-ak), who was working when a suspected gas explosion leveled William C. Franks Furniture.

Hunter says dispatcher Colleen Sondgerath was "rude," and her assistance "just horrible."

The Associated Press obtained a recording of the conversation as part of a Freedom of Information Act Request.

Hunter begins by telling Sondgerath that Machniak was working and offers her phone number "because my sister could be dead."

Sondgerath says there's no word about fatalities, an investigation is ongoing and suggests calling back.

Wayne police Sgt. Bruce Wolfgram says dispatchers were extremely busy. He declined further comment until officials reviewed the recording.
