The next time you visit a friend or family member in the hospital, you may not be able to grab something sugary from the cafeteria.

Some hospitals in our area are banning unhealthy foods from being sold on the property.

That's according to WISH-TV in Indianapolis.

IU Health hospitals across Indiana are eliminating sugary drinks and fried food from their menu options as part of the "Hospital Healthy Food Initiative."

The hospitals are also clearly marking which foods are healthier than others and making those healthier dishes more affordable.

"We eat here every day and we should be leading by example and eating healthy as well," said Dr. Greg Montgomery of IU Health Indianapolis.

The hospitals will reportedly bake food items instead of frying them.

The cafeterias will also apparently still carry soda and sports drinks -- they will just be of a diet or lower-calorie variety.

IU Health Systems have hospitals locally in Elkhart, Starke and La Porte Counties.
