One lucky dog has not only found a loving home, but also a noble purpose.
Zoey is the latest addition to the South Bend Police Department K-9 division. The 2-year-old Sheperd mix was found abandoned, walking the streets. A local animal shelter took her in and that's where she caught the eye of a South Bend Police sergeant.
Officers say her enthusiasm to play catch and hunt made her stand out from the rest. She'll start working as a drug dog in the spring.
"Zoey isn't a narcotic dog that we got from a shelter, and we're going to kind of make do. She was born to be a detector dog that just so happened to be at an animal shelter," said Sergeant Brian Miller.
Zoey will be replacing Tina, who's also a narcotics dog. Tina is 13years old. Sergeant Miller says it's time for her to retire and enjoy the rest of her years stress-free.
