SOUTH BEND – A rally was held this afternoon in downtown South Bend against the federal law requiring all employees, including religious institutions like the University of Notre Dame, to provide birth control in its health care coverage.
Last month, Notre Dame filed a lawsuit over the new health care law and this issue. It challenges the constitutionality of requiring religious organizations to provide, pay, or facilitate insurance coverage for services that go against Catholic teaching.
The lawsuit also alleges the government gets to decide which organizations are sufficiently "religious" to warrant an exemption from the requirement.
The rally started at Noon at the Jon Hunt Plaza on North Michigan in downtown South Bend.
