SOUTH BEND – With heavy hearts and solemn prayer, people are paying their respects to the late Bishop John D'Arcy today in South Bend.

The long-time former leader of the Fort Wayne-South Bend Catholic Diocese died Sunday from cancer.

Students, teachers, friends and family are gathering at Saint Matt's Cathedral in South Bend right now to say one of their last goodbyes.

Visitation here will be held all day for anyone to pay their respects.

People who considered D'Arcy a mentor and friend say they're happy their friend isn't suffering anymore.

“I’ve been sad today, but up until this point I’ve been joyful,” said friend Megan Swaim. “What could you hope more for your friend than the eternal reward of heaven.”

Visitation goes all day until a rosary at 5 p.m.

Bishop Kevin Rhoades will celebrate a Mass of Transferral at 7 p.m.

A similar day is scheduled Thursday in Fort Wayne. Then, a funeral mass will be held on Friday in Fort Wayne.
