GRANGER -- The two perspectives that Peter Colan, owner of
SportCrafters, and his team of six full- and six part-time employees
bring to the cycling business probably helped them win recognition
from the Indiana Economic Development Corp. in 2011, as an Indiana
Company to Watch.
The company, which is doing business as Spin Zone Cycling Outfitters
in Granger, serves the competitive cycling market both as a
manufacturer of training equipment and as a retailer of professional
cycling and triathlon equipment. It also has a service center.
The two sides of the business "complement each other very well," Colan
said. "Each offers the other the perspective on what the customer
really wants."
He said that he can take an idea for a product to customers and get
good feedback.
"You don't have to go outside your environment to find someone to go
over ideas," he said.
He started the manufacturing side of the business in 1996, but his
first product didn't work out so well. So, in 2000, he moved on to
designing and manufacturing training rollers for cyclists -- a piece of
