Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center Media Statement on the Supreme Court Ruling Upholding the Affordable Care Act

Mishawaka, Ind. (June 28, 2012)—With a belief that access and coverage for all is both a moral and practical imperative, Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center (SJRMC) is pleased with the Supreme Court’s decision, based on an initial read of the ruling. While we do not believe the Affordable Care Act to be perfect, it advances the creation of a health system that works for everyone.

We believe that the individual insurance requirement is an essential element in the successful transformation of our nation’s health care system because it will enhance access to regular and preventive care in the appropriate setting, reduce inefficient use of health care resources, and enable health care providers like us to provide more coordinated, integrated and truly patient-centered care.

“Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, along with other Catholic-sponsored providers, will continue to lead transformation, seeking new and better ways to provide compassionate, high-quality care in the communities we serve,” said Albert Gutierrez, President and Chief Executive Officer of Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. “We are taking the time to carefully read and evaluate the Supreme Court’s decision, and will provide guidance to the community on navigating the ACA through community forums and updates.”
