The man at the center of a police standoff on U.S. 31 near Lakeville Monday night is improving in the hospital.

U.S. 31 was closed for about two hours in the area of New Road.

Police say 66-year-old Michael Carrico was inside a detached garage with the windows and doors closed and his car running.

Officers were told Carrico was depressed and contemplating suicide.

Police say officers looked through the window and saw a long gun in his hands.

One officer broke out one of the garage's windows for ventilation.

Carrico reportedly had several self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the torso by the time SWAT team members were able to reach him.

Carrico was taken to Memorial Hospital where he was in fair condition Tuesday afternoon.
