A Stevensville man seriously injured in a Feb. 12 hit-and-run crash on Red Arrow Highway in Lincoln Township has died, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.
Jacob Hubbard, 33, passed at an area hospital from his injuries on Monday. Another victim who was hit in the crash, 24-year-old John Fowler, has since been released from the hospital.
The men were struck by a pickup truck police said was driven by 22-year-old Brandon Devries, of Stevensville, as they walked on Red Arrow Highway near the Interstate 94 overpass.
Lincoln Township police officers on patrol found the men lying in the road about 11:45 p.m.
Police arrested Devries a short time later at a local bar, Berrien County Assistant Prosecutor Michael Sepic said.
He was charged with four counts: operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious injury; failing to stop at a personal injury accident causing serious injury; operating while intoxicated, second offense; and operating with suspended license, second offense.
Sepic said Tuesday that the prosecutor’s office had not yet received the autopsy reports for Hubbard, but added Devries’ charges could be upgraded because of the man’s death.
Devries, who also was charged with operating while intoxicated in October 2006, was released from on a $1,500 bond.
He will be in court Friday for a pre-exam conference and back again on Tuesday for a preliminary examination.
