A 47-year-old Stevensville, Mich., man was killed about 9 a.m. Thursday in a three-vehicle crash in the westbound lanes of I-94 near the Portage exit.
Indiana State Police said Richard A. Hannah, 47, of Stevensville, was pronounced dead at Northlake Methodist Hospital in Gary from massive internal injuries. Hannah was a passenger in a car driven by Daniel Vandyke, 44, of Benton Harbor.
According to police, a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier was being driven west on the highway by Greg L. Hills, 37, of Valparaiso, Ind., when Hills lost control of his car. The car came to a stop facing south in the right westbound lane.
A 2010 Nissan Maxima driving by Vandyke was also driving in the right lane and was slowing to a stop as he neared Hills' car. Vandyke's car was struck in the rear by semi-truck driven by Ernest L. Johnson, 30, of Detroit.
After the collision, the Maxima was pushed into the driver's door of Hill's car. Vandyke's car went off the road into a snow embankment. The semi jackknifed, blocking all three lanes of traffic on the highway.
Hills suffered head and chest injuries, according to police. Vandyke was taken to Portage Community Hospital and then airlifted to Christ Hospital in Illinois with internal injuries. Johnson was not injured in the accident.
