We could soon learn if a southwest Michigan man found guilty of murdering his wife will get a new trial.

Doug Stewart is appealing the verdict. Last year a jury convicted him of the murder of Venus Stewart.

She disappeared from her parents' home in Colon in April of 2010. Investigators never found her body.

During a hearing on Wednesday, his lawyers claimed jurors heard potentially inflammatory comments during testimony from Ricky Spencer, Stewart's accomplice, that the jury instructions weren't impartial and that there had been inappropriate communication between the prosecutor and judge.

Venus' mother sat in the courtroom during the appeal.

"It doesn't make any sense to me that our system has that kind of power that he could actually get a retrial," she said.

The court will issue a ruling at a later date.
