MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (AP) — A winter storm that's still moving across Indiana has blanketed parts of northern Indiana with more than a foot of snow.
The National Weather Service's office in North Webster says the heaviest snowfall report it's received is 14 inches that fell on Michigan City. Snowfall in cities such as South Bend, Mishawaka, Elkhart and Goshen was anywhere between 9 and 14 inches early Wednesday, and Fort Wayne reported about five inches of snow mixed with sleet.
Weather Service meteorologist Gino Izzi in Chicago says he expects that northwestern Indiana's Lake and Porter counties received between 10 and 15 inches of snow, based on radar estimates.
He says snowfall totals will become clearer as weather observers report updated snow measurements Wednesday morning.
Seventeen northern Indiana have declared snow emergencies urging residents not to travel unless necessary.
