NORTH WEBSTER – Police have arrested a man accused of breaking in to a North Webster area home and then shooting at the homeowners.
Around 9:45 p.m. Monday, North Webster and Kosciusko County police were called to the area of 8947 East, County Road 500 North after receiving a 911 call of a home burglary.
Officers were told people were returning home to find an unknown vehicle in their driveway. The homeowners said a man ran from their home and pointed a long gun in their direction, telling them to leave before he fired a shot into their car.
The homeowners’ son arrived and saw the suspect leaving the scene heading east on C.R. 500 N. The son followed the suspect and updated the Kosciusko County Dispatch Center with vehicle information and the direction they were headed until a North Webster police officer interceded in the area of State Road 13 and C.R. 300 North. That’s when Kosciusko County deputies arrived and tried to stop the suspect, using stop sticks.
The suspect continued driving until finally stopping in the area of C.R. 150 N. and 650 East where the driver got out of his car and ran south into a field and woods.
Police set up a perimeter before Winona Lake officer Joe Bumbaugh and his canine unit were able to capture the suspect, who’s identified as 30-year-old Aubert Clevenger of Pierceton.
Clevenger was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital in Warsaw after he was bitten during the arrest.
Police say the weapon fired at the homeowners’ car was a 12 gauge shotgun.
Detectives are also investigating to see if Clevenger may have been involved in another home burglary.
