SOUTH BEND – Traffic could be tied up a bit just east of the South Bend Regional Airport this afternoon.
Shortly before 11 a.m., an SUV hit a utility pole in front of McDonald's on Lincolnway West just west of Bendix Drive.
Police say a person was trapped inside for about 20 minutes while fire units cut an opening in the vehicle to get the driver out.
Authorities say the driver suffered leg injuries and was taken to the hospital.
WSBT spoke with several witnesses on the scene, who believe due to the weather, the driver was traveling too fast headed west, and when approached the intersection of Lincolnway and Bendix, the driver was heard revving the engine.
Emergency utility crews are expected to spend most of the rest of the day replacing the utility pole, which was being held up by power lines on each side. However, no power lines were knocked down.
The work could close one of the lanes for a few hours.
