PORTAGE, Mich. – Police in southwest Michigan are looking for a woman who walked out of a Portage, Mich. nursing home and may have been headed to Cass County.
The Portage Department of Public Safety says 54-year-old Bonnie Merckley was discovered missing from her adult care facility Monday afternoon. After a search of the nursing home and the surrounding area, police were told of her disappearance.
Merckley suffers from a traumatic brain injury, and her daughter tells WSBT Merckley has the mental capacity of a 3-year-old.
Police say she can communicate but will become confused and agitated under stress or without her medication.
Authorities say Merckley may have asked for a ride to the areas of Marcellus, Jones or Vandalia, Michigan where her late parents lived.
Her daughter says Merckley had been telling people she wanted to see her folks.
She’s described as 4’ 11, weighs about 175 pounds with blonde/gray hair to the middle of her back. Merckley was wearing blue jeans, a black and white horizontal striped shirt, leopard skin purse and possible leopard skin sweater.
Anyone who has been in contact with her should call police.
