SOUTH BEND – A longtime South Bend teacher has filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Beverlie Beck is claiming age discrimination.

The 80-year-old is a teacher at Hamilton School. She's been with the South Bend Schools for 58 years.

Her action follows an e-mail sent by School Board President Roger Parent to the superintendent.

In it, he suggests moving out 2 older teachers to bring back younger teachers who had been laid off.

Parent admitted he wrote the e-mail and said he sometimes feels the system discriminates against younger teachers.

Beck says Parent said the "older teachers" had gotten poor evaluations. She denies that and claims slander and defamation of character.

Beck has also asked the South Bend School Board to censure Roger Parent.
