MONTPELIER, Ind. (AP) — North-central Indiana police say a woman and her 10-month-old son died when a car they were riding in collided with a freight train.
The Star Press of Muncie reports (http://bit.ly/ofqg6a ) 22-year-old Kristen Marie Janero and her son, Xander Janero, were pronounced dead at the scene of Saturday's collision with a Norfolk Southern Railroad train.
The Montpelier residents died not long after Xander had won a "most beautiful eyes" competition for his age group during the Montpelier Jamboree that's a Labor Day weekend tradition in the city 35 miles south of Fort Wayne.
The car's 29-year-old driver and his wife were hospitalized in stable condition at a Fort Wayne hospital.
Police said the driver pulled onto the track even though the crossing's warning lights and bells were activated.
