MICHIGAN CITY — A 19-year-old Michigan City woman took her life by standing on the tracks in front of an oncoming South Shore commuter train Monday night, the coroner reports.
Emergency responders were called to the tracks on Meer Road and 750 North in Springfield Township about 9 p.m.
LaPorte County Deputy Coroner Mark Huffman said staff members on the train reported braking for the woman but not being able to stop in time.
In ruling suicide, Huffman said the woman wore all dark clothing and walked to the tracks from her home. A motive was not known, he said.
Huffman said the train had about 30 passengers and was en route from South Bend to Chicago.
He said the passengers boarded another train dispatched to the site to complete their trip to Chicago.
