WATERFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A suburban Detroit family says an urn containing the ashes of their 12-year-old son was stolen during a break-in at their home.

The Detroit News reports (http://bit.ly/s68LH1) Wendy and Dave Turnquist returned Friday to their home in Oakland County's Waterford Township to find a side-door window smashed. They say the urn and a gold medallion with Ryan Christopher McDonald's thumbprint were missing.

Ryan died in 2007. For many years he battled Kearns-Sayre syndrome, a rare neuromuscular disorder.

Dave Turnquist, his stepfather, describes the theft as "absolutely nuts." He says the urn has a picture frame on each side that includes photographs of Ryan and his obituary. Turnquist says other valuables including a bracelet, an iPod touch and a laptop weren't taken.

Police say they're investigating.
