SODUS TOWNSHIP – Police say a 69-year-old man killed in a 4-wheeler crash in Berrien County's Sodus Township was found Friday morning by his brother.
Lt. Don Goulooze with the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department says the victim, Elmer Froehlich, lived alone on the property in the 3500 block of Dutch Lane. Froehlich's brother, who helps out on the farm, pulled into the driveway around 7:30 a.m. and saw him lying dead underneath the flipped ATV.
The brother told police he thought Froehlich was there in the driveway for at least 12 hours, since his headlights weren't on – indicating the crash happened before dark. Froehlich had a gun with him, and the brother thinks he was out deer hunting.
Goulooze said it looks like Froehlich was coming up his gravel driveway a little fast when he turned to the right, slid, and his ATV flipped over to land on top of him. The investigation is ongoing, however.
Froehlich was a lifetime resident and farmer in the Sodus area.
