SOUTH BEND – A St. Joseph County Commissioner says he will ask the Election Board to add two members to its "Vote Center Committee."
On Tuesday, two City Council members sent a letter to the County Commission, the Election Board and the County Council.
They're upset the Election Board did not ask anyone from the City Council to sit on the 6-person committee.
That committee will study the feasibility of reducing the 220 polling places in St. Joseph County to 25 vote centers.
“I think what’s important is that we get broad feedback, especially in this initial stage,” said County Commission President Andy Kostielney. “So, we plan on reaching out to both the city of South Bend and city of Mishawaka to send a representative, as well.”
“We have been monitoring this process for over a year now, and we want to make sure that the people of South Bend have their voices heard,” added South Bend Common Councilman Oliver Davis.
The committee is expected to give its vote center recommendation to the Election Board this fall.
The switch to vote centers in St. Joseph County would happen by the May 2014 primary.
