NEWPORT, Ind. (AP) — Authorities have captured a man who police say escaped from a western Indiana jail nearly 10 hours before guards noticed he was gone.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Joe Watts said Tuesday 25-year-old Cody Maple of Perrysville was captured in Champaign, Ill., about 48 miles from where he escaped.

Police say Maple escaped from the Vermillion County Jail near Newport, where he was being held on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm. WTHI-TV reports investigators believe Maple broke through a fence around a jail recreation area about 1:30 p.m. Monday, but his escape wasn't discovered until about 11 p.m.

Police say he was last seen running through a field near the jail about 25 miles north of Terre Haute and was wearing a black-and-white striped jail uniform.
