WANATAH – A volunteer firefighter critically injured in a semi-truck crash in LaPorte County has been taken off life support.
Friends of Michael Hendrixson, a volunteer firefighter with the Cass-Clinton Township Fire Department, did not want to talk to us on camera, but they marked their loss with a special memorial on the garage door of the fire station.
Outside the town hall, flags were flown at half-staff on Thursday, just days after a semi driver ran a red light at the intersection of U.S. 30 and U.S. 421 crashing into 2 cars, injuring three people, including Hendrixson, a father of two.
The other victims were treated for their injuries.
According to the accident report, the semi driver told LaPorte County police he couldn't see the light because of the sun's reflection.
He told officers by the time he realized it was red, it was too late.
The driver was given a breathalyzer. Investigators say he was not impaired.
He was cited, though, for running the light.
