Another way to enjoy the weather is to take fun trip down the tubing hill at St. Patrick's. These tubers, captured in January 2010 by a Tribune photographer are (from the back) Dennis and Kelli Brown, Middle John Fishbaugh,9, Luke Brown, 8, and Madison Brown,10. (Tribune Photo/MIKE HARTMAN )

Mild temperatures and the forecast of rain have caused St. Joseph County Parks to close innertubing hills, cross-country skiing and snow-shoe activities for the season.

While St. Patrick’s and Ferrettie-Baugo Creek county parks have snowmaking equipment, temperatures must remain consistently at 20 degrees or below to make snow.

Innertubing activities could only resume if 6- to 8-inches of dense, natural snow collected and temperatures were low enough to make snow for about a week, according to a park department news release. Because forecasts aren’t calling for that type of weather, park officials decided to end the winter sports season.

Cross-country skiing and snowshoe trails must have only a natural snow base.
