WARSAW – A Warsaw man accused of trying to run over a woman with his pickup truck and leading police on a long high-speed chase is behind bars.
City police say an off-duty Warsaw officer saw a fight between a man and woman on West Market Street shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday.
The officer then observed the truck accelerate quickly, leaving behind the woman. The man driving the truck then stopped and started backing toward the woman as the woman ran away.
The truck went over a curb toward the woman as she kept running. The woman was able to escape and hide behind a dumpster.
The pickup then sped off, heading east on Market St.
The off-duty officer called the Kosciusko Central Dispatch Center, giving a description of the blue Nissan pickup truck.
Police in the area found the truck about 4 blocks from the scene and stopped the pickup.
The driver was ordered out of the truck but then sped away leading police on a high-speed chase through downtown Warsaw, running several red traffic lights.
The chase continued south on State Road 15. Near County Road 200 South, the driver of the truck lost control and drove through a fence.
The driver regained control of the pickup and continued to Ferguson Road and County Road 250 South where he again lost control and stopped in a ditch.
The driver then fled on foot. As he neared a house, officers ordered the suspect to stop, but the man didn't. That’s when police tasered the man and took him into custody.
The suspect has been identified as Robert Garcia, 36, of Warsaw. Police say he was intoxicated and was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital before being booked into the Kosciusko County Jail on charges of felony resisting law enforcement, battery resulting in serious bodily injury, criminal recklessness with a motor vehicle and misdemeanor charges of driving while suspended and fleeing law enforcement.
Felony drunk driving charges are also pending.
Police say the 38-year-old Warsaw woman with whom Garcia is accused of having an altercation suffered head and hand injuries. She was taken to the hospital and was also intoxicated, according to the police report.
