A man in a motorized wheelchair, now identified as 49-year old Charles Dawson from Niles, was seriously injured Friday night when he was hit by a vehicle on 933 near Clifford Street.

This happened shortly before 8 p.m., according to an emergency dispatcher. Both lanes southbound were shut down and northbound was restricted to one lane for a time while police investigated.

We were originally told by dispatch this was a hit-and-run, but that is apparently not true. Police say the wheelchair was heading north in the turn lane when it apparently turned in front of the pickup truck and was hit.

Dawson has severe head injuries.

Police say the wheelchair and the man's clothing were both dark, which may have made him hard to see.

The driver of the pickup was taken to the hospital to be tested for drugs or alcohol as a formality, but police do not believe they were under the influence of any substances. Police arrested him because he does not have a license.
