A Muncie man is accused of being behind the wheel in a hit-and-run accident that injured a 2-year-old girl at a mobile home park.
Doroteo Castillo Chavez, 50, was arrested on preliminary charges of driving while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury and leaving the scene of an accident. Police said Chavez had a previous DWI conviction.
Police said Chavez hit the girl while she was trying to cross the street with her sister. She suffered injuries to her legs and face. An air ambulance transported the victim to Riley at IU Health in Indianapolis.
According to investigators, Chavez panicked after the accident, parking his car at his mobile home. They identified him with help from witnesses. Muncie police said both Chavez and his vehicle smelled strongly of alcohol, although the didn't find any alcoholic containers in the vehicle.
