One out of every 100 children will be abducted, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Local law enforcement may activate an Amber Alert to locate missing children but certain criteria must be met before they will do so.
The Amber Alert plan was first implemented in Texas after the kidnapping and murder of Amber Hagerman in 1996. The plan's goal is to help police locate abducted and endangered children by getting information out to the general public online and on-air.
Indiana implemented its own Amber Alert Plan in October 2002.
