Band director under investigation for alleged sexual contact with student

Technically, Craig Rogers is still the band director at North Putnam High School, but he has not been in class since mid-January. 

According to a letter sent home to parents, obtained by Fox59, "Mr. Craig Rogers is on paid leave since January 18th 2012 pending the conclusion of an external investigation."

The news was unsettling to a parent of a North Putnam High School Student in Rogers' class.

"Extremely frustrating because there were lots of rumors coming out and that is all we had to go by," said the parent.

Fox 59 went to the corporation to get more answers but was told "the corporation has no comment."

The parent, who did not want to be identified, said her child would often come home upset because of what was going on.

"My child was coming home telling these things were going on even before the 18th," said the parent.  "Why band practice was starting late every night and why he was locked in the office with a student."

The parent said the two paragraph letter sent home, almost a month after Rogers was no longer in class, is not good enough.

"I felt like they could have told us back in January that there was an investigation going on," said the parent.  "I do know why it took so long to come out. Covering for yourself maybe?"

The parent said the investigation has pushed her over the edge.

"I do not think we will be staying in this school district," said the parent. "We moved out here to get away from the problems that you sometimes get in the city like this and we found them out here."

The Crimes Against Children Unit, part of the Indiana State Police is investigating Rogers for sexual conduct with a student.  Their findings will be sent to the Putnam County Prosecutor when they are complete. That could take anywhere from a couple of weeks, to a month.
