Fox 59 has uncovered new information about the four people killed in the plane crash in Greensburg on Sunday, December 2nd. The four were deeply involved in Catholic Church, and they were flying back in time to see a new bishop installed in Indianapolis at SS. Peter & Paul Cathedral.
A church family mourning, a city cut to its core.
"It is a sad day in Greensburg," said Greensburg Mayor Gary Herbert. "We lost four good residents."
Donald and Barbara Horan, Stephen and Denise Butz were the four people killed in Sunday's plane crash.
The two couples were heading home from a weekend in Florida. Mayor Herbert said he was in disbelief after he heard about what happened to his friend Donald Horan.
"I even went as far as to call his cellphone to make sure he was someplace else," said Herbert. Come to find out, there were fatalities."
It was true. According to investigators the beacon light at the unmanned airport was working, but the runway lights were not activated. Donald Horan's plane went down about two miles past the Greensburg Airport runway.
"It appears there was some impact in a field and the plane came to rest on a hillside in a wooded area," said Detective William Meyerrose of the Greensburg Police Department.
Friends said both families were fixtures in the Greensburg community. They were especially well-known for getting involved in their church and giving back to others.
"I would like to thank the family and friends and members of this community who have been praying for us throughout the long evening hours, and all day today," said family friend Brian Wenning. "We have felt those prayers."
The parishioners at St. Mary's Cathedral said they are leaning on faith as they deal with tragedy, but healing will take time.
"It will not be gotten over quickly," said Herbert. "Absolutely not. They will not be forgotten."
Between the two couples a total of six children lost their parents in the crash. Members of the NTSB said they will continue surveying the wreckage to trying to get a better understanding of why that plane went down and four people died.
