Construction projects to impact summer events downtown

The orange barrels, flashing lights, and blocked off roads can only mean one thing - it is time for road construction.

The orange barrels, flashing lights, and blocked off roads can only mean one thing - it is time for road construction.

"It sucks!!" said one driver.

And while some are more understanding.

"I know everybody is complaining about it, but what are you going to do?  They have got to get it done and fix the roads," said another driver.

It does not make getting from Point A to Point B any easier. The latest detour affects drivers who use South Street as part of their commute. South Street, between Pennsylvania and East, has been shut down and will stay that way at least until late this fall.

"Delaware will be converted into a two-way street, we will be doing a street-scape project which will include trees, landscaping and ADA ramps and curbs and sidewalks," said Natalie Derrickson with the Department of Public Works.

The construction project will have a major impact on events set for downtown this summer. It'll affect events like the Summer Celebration, State Fair concerts held at Bankers Life Fieldhouse and of course, Indiana Fever games.

"Just like with any construction work project, we coordinate with events during our construction time, as much as possible," said Derrickson. "We always have signage up and advanced notice and we have been communicating with the public for quite some time."

That extra signage and extra notice does not make sitting and waiting at stoplights any easier.

"It gets really congested up in this area, so I guess that is really the baddest part," a driver said.

But others said they know it is just part of the process.

"They have got to do what they have got to do to make it better."

Drivers looking to avoid the road work can use East or Meridian Streets to the north or south, or Morris and Washington Streets to the east and west.
