Fans are getting ready for this year's Indy500. Many of them have spent the day outside the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, partying.
Despite the heat, race fans celebrated on the eve of the greatest spectacle in racing. Eric Schmidt, from Detroit, said he has been hanging out at the coke lot for years. "This spot has been picked out by our friends over the centuries as a great place to tailgate and meet everybody from America," Schmidt said.
The coke lot was a big party, Saturday. An announcer said: "Alright everybody, wave to the camera guy by the Tiki bar. Wave to the camera guy right now. You too could be famous".
People soaked in the atmosphere of the Indy500 weekend. Seve Sullivan-Doyle stayed cool in an inflatable pool at the coke lot. "Gotta stay cool. It's too hot out," he laughed. Sullivan-Doyle said this year was his first your camping. He said this is his second time, attending the Indy500.
"I've been up since 6 a.m. Friday," Sullivan-Doyle said. He said Saturday night he planned to hang out and hadn't decided when he was going to sleep. "Tonight? There's no plan. (We will) just have fun," he continued.
Ancil Jackson enjoyed his Indy500 weekend, surrounded by friends. "I like this atmosphere, before the race, and then when the cars start out…it's exciting," Jackson said.
Jackson is celebrating his birthday, this weekend. "I'll be 52-years-old Sunday, May 27th that's why I always buy something that has my birthday on it," he said.
Jackson has been coming out to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway since 1990. "On Memorial weekend, I wouldn't know what else to do with myself, if I wasn't sitting down here. I'll be honest with you, I would be stir crazy at home 'cause this is what we do," he continued.
If you are headed to the track tomorrow, remember a heat advisory was issued until 8p.m. Sunday. People are encouraged to drink water and try to avoid or limit caffeinated drinks as well as alcohol, officials suggested. Race fans are encouraged to wear light-colored clothing, sunglasses, light-colored hats, and encouraged to go under the shade.
According to IMPD, they issued 24 parking tickets today and towed 20 cars. According to Indiana Excise Police, they have issued tickets for under age drinking, minor possession of alcohol, consumption of alcohol, sale of alcohol without a permit, public intoxication, and drug possession.
